TULSA, Oklahoma - A sand truck collided with a bridge on Interstate 44 at Highway 169 Thursday morning. Officials say the truck was heading east on I-44 at about 7:30 a.m. when the collision happened. The truck is owned by a contractor who was working for the Oklahoma Department of Transportation. According to emergency workers on the scene, it was carrying a large steel box designed to hold and spread sand on its dump bed, when the truck's hydraulics malfunctioned and caused the spreader box to lift up. The box then hit the bridge over I-44. The impact knocked the spreader box off the truck and onto the highway. MORE

Sounds like the driver forgot to lower his bed when he should have. Ain't buying the 'malfunction'. That's for 'wardrobes'.

Yep the driver did not lower his bed with the weight of the box the hydraulics would never lift up on their own but they may sink or drop down on their own if there was leak or mal-function in the hydraulic system when the box was supposed to stay up during operation. Reminds me of drivers who crash into stores and blame their car brakes instead of coming clean and admit they mixed up the gas/brake pedals. If the box did lift up on it's own the driver should of noticed it anyhow and stopped his truck.
