As some of you know I'm a running nut and enjoy that sport alot- on June 2nd I plan to enter the Tulsa 5K Hungar Race. I ran that race last year, but my time was pretty g-r-i-m.. (27:09) I have been training this past weekend for that race, I'm working to bust the 25:00 mark and make a new PR for myself. The current issue of "Runner's World" mag (June, 2012) has an article about training for a 5K race from breaking the 30:00 mark, to breaking the 25:00 mark and busting the 20:00 mark. I'm well past the 30:00 mark, but the 25:00 mark is tuff, I'm busting my gut trying to get there- the 20:00 mark is way out of my league and is for elite top dog runners. According to the mag I need to increase my training mileage to 6-8 miles, I have been doing only 4 miles and I need to do 60 second speed runs instead of 30 every 5 minutes, I need to finish the last mile at a pace of 8:02. It's tuff. However looking at the race results of other races The 25:00 time is where I need to be in my age group in order to finish in the top 3 places and win a medal or a prize.

Here's a runner's poem from "Sport beans" It's just about what a runner thinks during a race. "Gun goes off. It's a madhouse traffic jam. Don't go too fast. Pace It. Big kicks. Who lives out here anyway? Ok, Lets not hit the wall. Another hill, you can do this. Feeling pretty good. It's just another run. A fast run with bib numbers and clocks. You got this. Bring on the finish line!"- Sports Beans.

www.athlinks.com is a web site that can keep track of your race results automaticly. After a race when the results are made final they post them on your account. The site also breaks down your finish time to pace per KM, pace per mile, average time of all your race events and your personal PR is kept. The site also lets you look up other race events by name such as looking at the finishing times of the Fort Worth 5K & 10K Mayfest 2012 results. They had some impressive times there well beyond my capacity. The over all finisher was 16:+ (something) for the male and 17:+ (something) for the overall female finisher. Very good impressive running.

My competition is basically the others in my racing age group of 55-59 and in order to finish in one of the top 3 spots I need to do at least a 25:00 or better and that is the goal I'm training for.

Best of luck to you SK. Thanks, I keep thinking I won't bust 25:00 and that's a bad atitude to have, it'll be a tuff & grueling run but if others in my age group can do it, why not me, Currently, Im working 2nd banana 3:pm-midnight and don't have much time to train except on weeekends. I think I'll be happy if I can just crack my old PR of 25:33 set in 2008, back then I was 4 years younger though. I need to average a 8:00 pace to make it under 25:00. I ran this event last year the course on the RiverSide jogging Trail at 96th street by the Jenks Bridge, the course runs north up to the Casino's north end and back. A 5K is a short race but very fast, the RiverSide Trail is fast course anyhow because it's all flat with no upgrades so speeds are higher. I wonder if Val will be running it, it's close to her.

The June, 2012 issue of "Runner's World" Mag has an article on the training required to beat the 25:00 barrier and according to it I need to increase my training mileage to 6 miles or more and do 30 or 60 second speed runs and you need to start the training at least 2 weeks out from race day 3 or 4 days a week. I have only been doing 4-mile runs on weekends. When that race gun goes off it's serious business there are no do-overs the race is on, if you have a stone in your shoe or something goes wrong it's too bad.

Yesterday- Friday afternnon before I went to work I did a bit of running, The weather was so nice I could not resist- I did a flat one mile timed run from mile marker to mile marker, and my time was nothing to brag about- If I'm going to do anything on the June 2nd race I need to increase my training. A lady at the DollarTree Store on Garnett is also a runner, she did the Route 66 half-marathon last year and we chated a bit as I was checking out, she said her times in a 5K are around 32:00, but she said she likes to focus on distance instead of speed, she likes the longer races where she can just cruise along at an easy pace thru the miles, while other runners focus on speed and just want to burn thru the miles as fast as they can. I'm more in the 2nd group.

There are a few Memorial Day5K races up coming, but they are all being run downtown with no parking, I'm focused on the June 2nd Hunger run at 96th and RiverSide, it's a win-win event- the runners have a blast doing a good race and the money goes to a good cause. I did a good training run Sunday afternoon funny how some days you can run better than other days. To bad there was no race on Sunday I was pumped up and loose as a goose doing a easy 9.3 pace. South I-44 the RiverSide Trail has no mile markers for some reason. Omaha trails have markers every 10th of a mile.
